Buying Hiking Gear
At some point during a hectic year, most of us desire to just get away for awhile. You may begin to daydream about the wide open spaces, and camping in and around some of the nation’s most beautiful national and state parks. Because many of us live in cities today, you will need to accumulate hiking gear if you desire to spend any time in the great outdoors. This means that you need to purchase gear and take care of it so it is ready to use whenever the wanderlust strikes.
One piece of hiking gear that is often overlooked is equipment that will always provide a source of water to drink. Water is heavy to carry, but essential for life. If the hiking to be done is near streams or lakes, a good water bottle that filters most of the viruses found in the water is an invaluable piece of gear to include. The taste of fresh water from a clear stream or lake is always welcome, but without a filter on the bottle, you could be playing roulette with possible sickness. You can use iodine tablets in place of filters for water safety as well, but the water turns to a dirt color and the iodine isn’t very pleasant to the pallet.
Other Hiking Gear
Another piece of hiking gear that is often overlooked but necessary is a map, compass or GPS unit. If there is a problem during your hike and you need to get back to your parking area, a GPS unit can help you to find your car quickly. Some might say that all you have to do is follow the trail back. Inclement weather like snow can take away the path and if you lose your daylight, the woods will look different than they did in the a few hours before. It is always a good idea to have a reliable way to find civilization.
Some hiking gear that should be packed even if only hiking for the day is clothing that can keep you warm. If there is a problem and it is impossible to walk back to your initial point, or if you become disoriented, that jacket you carried all day might come in handy indeed. Because the weather in most of the nation’s national and state parks can change quickly, you should try to be prepared for as many problems that you know could possibly happen.
Hiking gear is more than a pair of boots and a walking stick. Always be as prepared for bad luck when you leave civilization. Murphy might not be everywhere at the same time, but when you are in an environment that is unfamiliar it often seems like Murphy’s Law is there also. Be prepared, and your day of hiking is much more likely to finish successfully and happily.
